Rocket Lab Acquires Iridium Communications for $8 Billion

Rocket Lab announced Monday it is acquiring satellite communications pioneer Iridium Communications in an $8 billion cash-and-stock deal. The acquisition aims to bolster Rocket Lab's market position by combining its launch services and satellite manufacturing with Iridium's established global satellite network and valuable wireless spectrum.

The move is the latest in a series of consolidations within the satellite industry over the past year. Notably, Amazon.com agreed to acquire Globalstar in April, and SES completed its purchase of Intelsat last year. SpaceX has also pursued spectrum assets, agreeing to acquire them from EchoStar.

Iridium, which reported $114 million in net income on $872 million in revenue last year, operates a constellation of 66 low-Earth-orbit satellites. These satellites provide connectivity for a range of users, including maritime operations, mining companies, and U.S. government agencies. The company's worldwide spectrum rights are considered particularly valuable assets.

The acquisition values Iridium shares at $54 each, reflecting an enterprise value of approximately $8 billion. Iridium's stock saw a significant increase, jumping 20.8% in trading following the announcement, while Rocket Lab shares rose 6.8%.

This strategic acquisition arrives as SpaceX continues to expand its own satellite services, Starlink, which utilizes its own rockets and a constellation of roughly 10,000 satellites. While SpaceX has focused on heavy-lift launches and broadband constellations, Rocket Lab has specialized in small satellite launches.

Rocket Lab, which began as a launch provider about 20 years ago, has been actively expanding into satellite manufacturing and operations through acquisitions in recent years. The company has expressed a long-term goal of operating its own satellite network, moving beyond solely building and launching spacecraft for clients. With the integration of Iridium's network, Rocket Lab plans to develop a new satellite fleet to upgrade Iridium's existing constellation.

Iridium itself has a history as an early pioneer in low-Earth-orbit satellite networks, launching its initial satellites nearly three decades ago. The company experienced bankruptcy and subsequent reorganization in its past.

"Success will come from those who can bring new innovations to space quickly and sustain them over time as efficiently as possible," said Iridium CEO Matt Desch in a statement regarding the deal.
