Residential Cruise 'Villa Vie Odyssey' Halts Operations Due to Fuel Costs

The residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey has suspended operations and passengers have been instructed to disembark due to a critical fuel shortage off the coast of Cambodia. The ship, which has been operating as a full-time residence for passengers, announced it could no longer secure the necessary fuel to continue its journey.

According to an internal announcement, the Odyssey will enter a temporary layup, with crew remaining onboard to maintain essential systems. Passengers were informed they must leave the vessel by 2 p.m. on October 27, 2026, with arrangements to be made for those unable to collect all belongings immediately.

The suspension comes as a result of sharply increased fuel costs, particularly in regions where the company has been operating. Fuel expenses, which historically averaged around $1,800 per cabin monthly, recently surged to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia, a rise attributed to the ongoing Middle East conflict. Villa Vie Residences stated that these increases could not be passed on to residents, placing the operating model under unsustainable financial pressure.

A statement from Villa Vie Residences indicated that significant measures were taken to reduce fuel consumption, including slowing the itinerary and extending time in port. However, these efforts were insufficient to offset the extraordinary cost increases. The company is currently working with residents to coordinate their departure and assist in finding temporary accommodations.

Villa Vie Residences is now focusing on supporting residents, crew, and employees while pursuing restructuring and recapitalization efforts over the next 60 days. The company cautioned that no outcome is assured.

This incident follows a troubled launch for the Villa Vie Odyssey in 2024. The ship's departure was delayed for months, eventually setting sail nearly five months behind its originally scheduled May departure after numerous delays and last-minute repairs.

The vessel, originally built in 1993, has a history of sailing for various cruise lines, including Cunard and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines. Passengers had paid between $99,999 and $899,000 for multi-year voyages.

In the summer, Villa Vie Residences had announced plans to launch a second residential cruise ship, the Legacy, in 2029, intended to offer larger living quarters and enhanced amenities. The current situation raises questions about the future viability of such ventures.

One observer noted the potential trauma for residents who had sold their land-based properties to invest in this venture, expressing fears that some, particularly the elderly, might lose everything and were left in uncertainty in Cambodia.
