Renault E-Space Concept Revives MPV Design with Electric Powertrain Focus

Renault has unveiled a concept vehicle, the E-Space, that signals a potential electrified comeback for the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment. This 'design study,' presented at the Paris Motor Show, suggests a rethinking of family car design away from the prevalent SUV models.

The E-Space concept draws inspiration from the original Espace MPV, which first arrived in Britain in 1985 and was known for its spaciousness. The new concept emphasizes maximizing interior room, visibility, and passenger comfort. It measures 4.7 meters in length and features a large glasshouse for an airy cabin and Rolls-Royce-style coach doors that open in opposite directions.

Designers have intentionally steered the E-Space concept away from typical SUV aesthetics, opting for a lower stance and more aerodynamic proportions. Alexandre Malval, Renault's design boss, stated that the concept demonstrates the brand's ability to create appealing vehicles in a market saturated with SUVs and crossovers.

Inside, the E-Space features six individual seats arranged in three rows on a flat floor. The middle-row seats can swivel 180 degrees to face the rear, creating a lounge-like configuration. A sliding center console includes amenities such as an air purifier, mini-fridge, and video game controllers. The interior design draws inspiration from furniture, with slim seats intended to enhance the sense of space. The cabin is finished with plush materials, including deep rouge fabrics and thick carpets, aiming to create a living-room-like atmosphere.

Front and center is a large, curved screen spanning nearly the full width of the cabin, known as the OpenR Panorama. Renault indicates this display previews technology planned for future production vehicles. The vehicle also incorporates by-wire steering technology, which, along with the removal of traditional mechanical components, allows for a more forward cabin placement, extending the wheelbase and passenger space.

While Renault officially describes the E-Space as a concept car showcasing its future design direction and provides limited details on its electric powertrain, the public's reception could influence its production potential. The Espace was removed from UK showrooms in 2013, though the nameplate remains in use across mainland Europe as a hybrid SUV. The original Espace was noted for its plastic body and 2.0-liter engine, with subsequent generations offering larger engines and evolving styling, but eventually saw its market share diminish with the rise of SUVs.
