Reddit to Join S&P 500 Index
The social media platform's inclusion signifies a notable achievement in prestige and investment potential.
Reddit is set to be included in the influential S&P 500 index next week, a move that will enhance the online forum's prestige and investment appeal. The S&P 500 is a widely recognized benchmark for the health of the broader U.S. stock market, and inclusion in the index is considered a significant accomplishment for companies. Companies are selected for the index based on criteria demonstrating stability, including market capitalization and consistent profitability.
Reddit's stock saw a surge of nearly 14% around midday Friday following the announcement. The inclusion means that trillions of dollars in investments, which are benchmarked against the S&P 500, will likely flow into Reddit's stock. This includes investments made through mutual funds and exchange-traded funds that track or mimic the index.
Index funds have become increasingly popular among investors due to their lower costs and tendency to outperform funds that actively select individual stocks. Reddit's transition into the S&P 500 will occur as of Tuesday. To be eligible for the index, a stock must have been trading publicly for at least 12 months. S&P Dow Jones Indices, the operator of the index, adhered to this guideline recently when it opted not to expedite SpaceX's entry into the index following its initial public offering.
The social media company's inclusion follows a period of strong financial performance, including its highest quarterly revenue to date. Reddit has reported profits in nearly every quarter since its public debut in 2024. Analysts anticipate that overall profits could more than double in 2026, driven by a substantial increase in revenue.
