Rare Hermès Birkin 25 Bag Expected to Fetch $50,000 at UK Auction

A rare Hermès Birkin 25 handbag, crafted from sea-green matte alligator leather, is set to be auctioned in North Wales with an expected sale price of up to £50,000 ($63,000 USD).
The auction will take place on Tuesday evening at Wilsons Auction's Queensferry branch. The bag features gold hardware and is considered one of the most coveted luxury accessories globally.
Experts note that exotic materials like alligator and crocodile are top-tier luxury within Hermès' offerings, with only a limited number of Birkin bags produced using these skins. Each bag is handcrafted by a single artisan.
The specific shade, Vert D'eau (sea-green), is described as a soft, pale mint green, and its matte finish is particularly sought after for its elegance and durability. The Birkin 25, introduced in 2004, is now considered the most desirable size due to its versatility and scarcity.
James Constantinou, founder of Prestige Pawnbrokers, highlighted the bag's rarity due to the combination of its size, color, and finish. He noted that such a unique piece can command prices approaching £100,000 on the pre-loved market. Celebrity stylist Lisa Talbot added that this particular combination is unusual and would generate excitement among collectors.
The Birkin handbag, created in 1984 for British actress Jane Birkin, has become an iconic status symbol. Prices for Birkin bags typically start at £10,000, but can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction, with some considering them a better investment than gold.
Acquiring a Birkin directly from Hermès is notoriously difficult, with potential buyers often needing to cultivate a long-standing relationship with sales associates and demonstrate a history of purchasing other items from the brand. This has led to scrutiny and, in some instances, lawsuits alleging unfair sales practices. Hermès has recently pledged to increase transparency around its sales policies in the United States following a class-action lawsuit.
The bag being auctioned comes with a dust cover and box and is rated in AA condition.
