A meticulously preserved 1977 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow I, boasting a mere 604 miles and nearly 50 years of single ownership, has significantly surpassed auction expectations, selling for over twice its market value.

The vehicle, one of the final iterations of the Silver Shadow I before its production ended, fetched £82,125 at a H&H Classics auction in Nottinghamshire. This figure exceeded its lower estimate by over £12,000 and represents two-and-a-half times the typical market price of £33,500 for a museum-quality example, according to classic car insurer Hagerty.

The sale established a new record, making it the most expensive non-celebrity-owned Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow I ever sold at public auction.

Acquired new in January 1977 for £16,897.75 (equivalent to approximately £102,138 today), the car was specified with a beige interior and whitewall tires. It is equipped with the larger 6.75-liter V8 engine characteristic of later Mk I models.

For the past 33 years, the Rolls-Royce has been stored in a climate-controlled garage. To further protect its components, it was elevated on axle stands, and a custom cover was used to shield the bodywork. This careful preservation contributed to its exceptional condition, with factory paintwork, interior, and mechanicals remaining as they were upon its original departure from the Crewe assembly line.

The majority of the car's 604 miles were clocked up in the first 12 months of its life. It has been preserved ever since

The car's history file indicates that the majority of its 604 miles were accumulated within the first few months of its life. By November 1977, it had traveled 412 miles. Subsequent usage was minimal, with only occasional short journeys, including one for the owner's daughter's wedding in 1986, before being placed into long-term storage in 1993 with 590 miles on the odometer. A few more brief trips have since added the remaining miles.

Despite the Silver Shadow I being produced in relatively large numbers and having a high survival rate, this particular example's condition and low mileage set it apart. While 'good' restored examples can be found for as little as £8,700, H&H Classics expressed doubt that another vehicle in such pristine, original condition, complete with all its original documentation, would emerge on the market.

James McWilliam, sales manager at H&H Classics, commented that the car's strong performance was not surprising given its "single ownership, originality and incredibly low mileage."

The auction saw a total of over £1.7 million generated from the sale of 55 classic, collector, and performance vehicles. Other notable sales included a 2010 Bentley Brooklands Coupé, formerly owned by Jay Kay of Jamiroquai, which sold for £147,375, and a 1983 Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole that achieved £92,250. A 1993 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible IV also sold for £100,000, and two Jaguar E-Types from 1967 and 1969 sold for £59,344 and £34,875 respectively.
