Pringles Introduces Hot Dog Buns in Chip Flavors, Sparks Online Debate
The limited-edition, potato-based buns come in Sour Cream & Onion, BBQ, and Honey Mustard, available for a limited time.
Pringles is venturing into a new culinary space with the release of its limited-edition "Pop Dog Buns," which are potato-based hot dog buns infused with three of the brand's signature chip flavors: Sour Cream & Onion, BBQ, and Honey Mustard. The buns are designed to fit inside a standard Pringles can, measuring 7.5 inches in length, slightly longer than a traditional hot dog bun.
The new product aims to offer a novel experience for summer barbecues and is part of Pringles' "Once You Pop" campaign, which seeks to revive its iconic 90s catchphrase, "Once You Pop, The Pop Don’t Stop." Mauricio Jenks, Salty Snacks Brand & Content Lead, stated that the campaign's goal is to "take something everyone knows and completely flip it into an exciting new snackable experience" to engage younger consumers.
The flavored buns promise distinct taste profiles. The Sour Cream & Onion variant is described as offering "all the tangy, savory and creamy flavors fans know and love," while the BBQ bun aims for a "smoky with a touch of sweetness." The Honey Mustard bun is designed to "combine the sweetness of honey and the tang of mustard for a bold, satisfying twist."
Pringles announced the Pop Dog Buns via an Instagram video, eliciting a range of reactions from consumers online. Some expressed enthusiasm, with one commenter quoting Jennifer Coolidge's line from "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde" and calling the innovation a "true culinary breakthrough." Others voiced confusion and skepticism, with comments such as "Alright, who in corporate thought of this mess," and "Is today July Fools or something?"
The limited-edition buns will be available for a limited time with the purchase of a Pringles three-pack. Consumers can acquire them on July 8 and July 15, coinciding with National Hot Dog Day, through OnceYouPopMarket.com or via Pringles' official Instagram and Facebook pages. Customers are advised to sign up for email alerts on OnceYouPopMarket.com, as the promotion is time-limited and supplies may be depleted quickly.
