Primark Cuts Prices Amid Intensifying Competition

Primark is implementing price reductions on hundreds of clothing items, including jeans, jumpers, and socks, in an effort to win back customers amid fierce competition. The move comes as the retailer faces increased pressure from ultra-cheap online marketplaces like Shein and Temu, as well as other platforms such as TikTok Shop and Vinted.

Analysts note that the cost of living crisis may also be impacting shoppers' spending habits. Primark, which operates over 190 stores in the UK, has observed a decline in like-for-like sales, a key retail performance indicator.

"It's the kind of headline you'd expect from M&S or Next," said retail analyst Natalie Berg, referring to the unexpected nature of such significant price cuts from a retailer known for its low-cost model. "When Shein is selling dresses for £3, you've got to respond, right?" Berg explained that by reducing prices on core products, Primark aims to attract shoppers with affordable staples, a strategy often employed by supermarkets with items like milk and bananas.

The announcement of these price adjustments precedes the planned spin-off of Primark by its parent company, Associated British Foods, onto the London stock market next year. The competitive landscape in the fashion retail sector has transformed significantly in recent years, with the emergence of aggressive online players challenging established brands.
