Poundland Edges Towards Collapse as Owner Seeks Buyer

Poundland is facing an uncertain future as its owner, Gordon Brothers, has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, a move that would give the retailer 10 days to seek a rescue deal.

The discount chain, which operates 600 stores and employs 12,000 staff, is reportedly edging towards collapse, according to the BBC. The company's managing director, Barry Williams, informed employees via a memo on Tuesday that the American owner had limited the chain's access to funding.

Poundland was purchased last year for a nominal £1 from the Polish retail group Pepco by Gordon Brothers, which had been struggling. However, just over a year later, in September, Gordon Brothers placed the business up for sale.

An offer from Irish firm Martin Property Group (MPG) to acquire Poundland as a going concern was reportedly insufficient to meet Gordon Brothers' expectations. Gordon Brothers aims to recoup a £30 million shareholder loan it inherited from previous owners as part of its deal, but MPG's offer is understood to have fallen short of this amount and was not prepared for full advance payment.

As a result, Poundland is now on a path toward an insolvency process. Gordon Brothers may seek a new owner through a pre-pack administration or opt to dismantle the business and sell individual stores to interested parties, including Iceland, Lidl, and B&M.
