Porsche Taycan EV Gains Virtual Gears to Enhance Driving Excitement

Porsche has introduced a significant update to its Taycan electric vehicle, incorporating virtual gear changes designed to enhance the emotional driving experience and appeal to drivers accustomed to traditional internal combustion engines. The 2027 Taycan now features an "e-shift" system that simulates noticeable gear shifts and is complemented by an enhanced electric sport sound and a virtual rev counter.

This new system allows drivers to switch between automatic and manual modes, using paddle shifters on the steering wheel to select from eight virtual gears. The simulated "shift jerks" and "gear-specific drag torque" are engineered to mimic the engine-braking behavior found in gasoline-powered cars, while a virtual rev limiter provides what Porsche describes as "authentic feedback."

The e-shift system is optional on most Taycan models, with the exception of the top-tier Turbo GT, which includes it as standard. This technology follows similar innovations seen in other sporty EV models, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5N and the Honda N, which also employ virtual gear systems and synthesized engine sounds to create a more engaging driving experience.

Beyond the virtual gearing, the 2027 Taycan also boasts improvements in range and interior technology. Optional low rolling resistance tires on certain rear-wheel-drive models increase the car's maximum range by up to 12 miles, reaching an estimated 434 miles on a single charge. This extended range aims to alleviate range anxiety for longer journeys.

Inside, the Taycan receives Porsche's new generation infotainment system, "Porsche Digital Interaction." This updated system features a minimalist design, configurable widgets, enhanced AI-powered voice control via Voice Pilot, and improved integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The navigation system has also been upgraded with more precise route calculation, 3D building renderings, and an optimized charging planner.

These infotainment updates align the Taycan with other recent Porsche EV releases, including the Macan EV and Cayenne EV, and will be available over-the-air. For performance enthusiasts, an optional Manthey Kit is now available for the 1,020 horsepower Turbo GT. This kit offers aerodynamic, chassis, and powertrain enhancements aimed at significantly boosting the performance of the range-topping model, marking the first time such a performance kit has been offered on an electric Porsche.

The updated 2027 Porsche Taycan models are now available for order.
