Popeyes Franchise Operator Faces Widespread Closures Amid Bankruptcy
Dozens of Popeyes locations may close permanently after a bankruptcy auction failed to secure buyers for underperforming restaurants.
Sailormen Inc., a Miami-based franchise operator of Popeyes restaurants, is facing the potential closure of dozens of its locations following a failed bankruptcy auction. The company filed for Chapter 11 restructuring in January, initially seeking to sell 136 Popeyes restaurants.
Auction Shortfall
Last week's bankruptcy auction saw no bidders for up to 52 of the targeted restaurants. Sailormen's lawyers stated in a bankruptcy filing that these stores represent a burden on the company's estate, and as of July 1, 2026, the operator will lose the authority to use cash collateral to maintain these locations. This marks a significant setback for the franchise owner, which aimed to shed underperforming sites to cut costs.
While Sailormen initially proposed closing 52 locations, a judge has only approved lease rejections for 18 restaurants in Florida and Georgia, with those expected to cease operations by the end of June. The affected areas include Jacksonville, Pensacola, Bradenton, St. Petersburg, Gulf Breeze, Neptune Beach, Brunswick, Cairo, and Hinesville.
Brand and Customer Perspectives
Despite the auction's outcome, Popeyes has agreed to purchase 16 of the 136 locations, and another company, Pulse Restaurant Group, has acquired 50 others. Popeyes corporate stated that 97 of the original 136 restaurants will transition to new local operators. "We're proud of the strong franchisees stepping up here, and this outcome reflects the strength of the Popeyes brand throughout Florida and Georgia," a company statement read.
However, some customers have expressed a lack of surprise regarding the closures, citing issues such as poor service, high prices, and declining quality at various locations. Online discussions mention inconsistencies in service and food quality, with some patrons finding the chain's offerings to be an increasingly poor value.
Chain's Position
The company has attributed business challenges to inflation and a decrease in customer traffic since the pandemic. Popeyes operates nearly 3,600 locations across the U.S. and Canada, remaining one of the largest chicken-focused fast-food chains alongside competitors like KFC and Chick-fil-A. The brand is known for its spicy chicken sandwiches, tenders, wings, and various side dishes. It remains unclear how many employees will be affected by the potential closures.
