Peugeot to Exit Australian Market as Distributor Ends Partnership
Inchcape Australasia will cease distributing Peugeot vehicles after nine years due to persistent sales slumps.
Peugeot will no longer be distributed in Australia as its local distributor, Inchcape Australasia, has decided to cut the brand from its portfolio after a nine-year partnership. The decision, which follows years of declining sales for the French automaker, was mutually agreed upon by Inchcape Australia and Stellantis, the parent company of Peugeot.
"As part of Inchcape's standard approach to portfolio management, we continuously review our partnerships to ensure we have the right portfolio of brands for our business, aligned with our strategic growth objectives," a statement from Inchcape read. "As a result, Inchcape Australia and Stellantis have mutually agreed to end their distribution partnership for Peugeot in Australia, with the final date to be confirmed following a transition period."
Stellantis has stated that the Peugeot brand will continue in Australia and that further updates on its local plans will be provided in due course. However, the departure of its distributor marks a significant blow to the brand's presence in the country.
Peugeot's sales in Australia have reached record lows in recent years. In the first five months of 2026, the manufacturer sold only 373 vehicles, a 35 percent decrease compared to the previous record low in 2025. Sales for the entirety of 2026 are predicted to fall short of 1,000 vehicles, following the 1,350 sales recorded in 2025. This sharp decline is a stark contrast to the brand's performance in 2005, when it sold over 7,000 vehicles in Australia.
This move by Inchcape Australasia mirrors a similar decision made two years prior, when the distributor axed Citroen, another Stellantis-owned brand. Citroen sales in Australia had not surpassed 1,000 vehicles annually since 2015, after peaking at 3,803 sales in 2007.
Currently, there are 29 Peugeot dealerships operating in Australia. Subaru is noted as the best-performing brand distributed by Inchcape in the Australian market.
