PayPal is laying off 251 employees at its San Jose, California headquarters, according to a filing with the state's Employment Development Department. The cuts are part of a wider plan by the payments technology company to reduce its global workforce by approximately 20%, which amounts to about 4,760 jobs.

Workforce Reduction Details

The layoffs, which are scheduled to take effect on October 30, will impact dozens of senior employees and engineers. The affected roles include 42 senior software engineers, 28 senior engineering managers, and various other leadership and middle management positions across the organization. These higher-earning positions, with senior directors typically earning over $300,000 annually, represent a significant aspect of the current job cuts impacting the Bay Area.

Strategic Alignment

A spokesperson for PayPal stated that these staffing changes are integral to a multi-year transformation aimed at simplifying global operations, enhancing execution, and positioning the company for long-term growth. The company also cited an effort to accelerate its adoption of artificial intelligence as a driver for these reductions.

"Decisions like these are never easy," the spokesperson added. "We recognize the impact they have on our employees and are committed to supporting them through this transition."

Broader Tech Layoffs

These layoffs at PayPal are part of a larger trend of workforce reductions within the technology sector, particularly affecting the Bay Area. This week alone, Uber announced plans to cut 10% of its workforce, with a significant portion based in the Bay Area, and Amazon disclosed 150 job cuts in Northern California.

Founded in 1998, PayPal has grown into one of the world's largest payment platforms and acquired Venmo in 2013. The company employs approximately 23,800 people globally.
