Oribe Shampoo Recalled Nationwide Due to Potential Bacterial Contamination
Kao USA has issued a voluntary recall for two Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo products after testing revealed the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae.

Kao USA has announced a voluntary recall of two Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo products due to the potential presence of the bacterium Pluralibacter gergoviae. The recall affects the 8.5 oz size (UPC 840035231242, lot code YR010556) and the 33.8 oz size (UPC 840035231273, lot codes YR010566 and YR010576) of the shampoo. The larger bottle retails for $166, while the smaller size is priced at $52.
The affected products were manufactured between February 21 and February 26, 2026, and were distributed nationwide in the United States and Canada through salons and other retailers. The contamination was discovered during product testing.
Pluralibacter gergoviae can cause infections that may lead to severe health consequences, particularly for vulnerable populations such as those with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or individuals undergoing surgical procedures. While the risk to healthy individuals is considered low, the FDA noted that such infections can be life-threatening to the immunocompromised.
Kao USA stated that it is working with the FDA to remove the affected lots from warehouses and has requested that retail and salon partners remove the products from sale and use. Consumers who purchased the recalled shampoo are advised to stop using it immediately. Those seeking a replacement can contact the Kao Professional Hair Technical Hotline at 800-333-2442 or email [email protected].
This is not the first instance of Pluralibacter gergoviae contamination in beauty products. In 2024, nearly one million units of Amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo were recalled for the same reason. The bacterium is known to be resistant to common preservatives found in cosmetics.
