Oracle Slashes Global Workforce by 21,000 as AI Integration Accelerates

Oracle has reduced its global workforce by approximately 21,000 employees over the past year, as the software and cloud computing firm strategically integrates artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. The company reported having about 141,000 full-time employees as of May 31, 2026, a decrease from the roughly 162,000 employees recorded a year prior. This reduction represents about 13% of Oracle's total workforce.

In its annual report, Oracle stated that the "deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce." This move aligns with a broader trend across the technology sector, where companies are investing heavily in AI infrastructure, including data centers, and reallocating resources. Competitors such as Amazon and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, have also made substantial job cuts in recent months as they prioritize AI development.

Estimates from employment tracking firms indicate that more than 100,000 tech workers have been laid off across the industry in the last year. Oracle confirmed significant job cuts in April through online posts from senior employees, though the full scale of these layoffs was not disclosed until the filing of its annual report.

The restructuring efforts have resulted in approximately $1.8 billion in severance payments and other associated costs for Oracle in the past fiscal year, a substantial increase compared to the $374 million restructuring expenses from the previous year. Oracle acknowledged that its reorganization initiatives can be disruptive and cautioned that the reorganisation may lead to a scarcity of skilled workers in specific roles. This potential shortage could impact productivity and, consequently, affect the company's earnings.

"As our cloud and AI businesses grow, we will continually balance our resources and restructure our development group to help ensure we have the right people delivering the best cloud and AI products to our customers around the world," an Oracle representative told the BBC.
