OpenAI's UK Employees Earn Average of $2.3 Million Amidst Soaring Valuation

OpenAI's employees in London received an average compensation of £2.3 million in 2025, driven by substantial share awards as the artificial intelligence company's valuation grew significantly. The London office of OpenAI reported a total wage bill of £87.3 million in base salaries, with employees earning an average of £794,000 annually. However, share-based compensation reached £167.8 million, contributing to the higher overall payout.

These awards brought the total staff costs for the year to £258 million, a considerable increase from £60.7 million in 2024. This figure includes pension costs and other employee benefits. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO), aiming to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation around $1.4 trillion. Despite this, recent forecasts suggest the company could expend $278 billion by the end of the decade.

The company's UK operations saw a notable rise in turnover, nearly tripling from £79.2 million to £293 million in 2025. OpenAI attributes this growth to an expansion in sales, marketing, and research and development activities. Profits also increased from £5.4 million to £20.3 million.

OpenAI's London subsidiary serves as its largest international research hub and also houses its sales, marketing, and government affairs teams. The company plans to relocate its London headquarters to King's Cross.

Meanwhile, rival AI firm Anthropic is also expanding its UK presence, aiming to grow its team to 800 people. Anthropic is reportedly offering competitive salaries, with reports indicating a £145,000 package for a personal assistant role.

Investor Jitters Impact AI Stocks

Despite the growth in AI companies, investor sentiment has become cautious, leading to a drop in AI-related stocks. Figures released recently showed a 45 percent surge in Anthropic's revenue for the three months ending in September, reaching $16.8 billion. However, this has not entirely allayed investor concerns.

Market analysts have noted an increasing unease among tech investors regarding the debt financing the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. There is a growing fear that rapid advancements in the sector might lead to setbacks. Reports suggesting that Anthropic's revenue growth may not be meeting expectations have contributed to these anxieties, raising questions about the long-term sustainability of the current AI euphoria.
