Online platform allows travelers to buy and sell unused holiday bookings

A growing number of travelers are turning to online platforms to resell vacation bookings they can no longer use, a trend that has seen the number of marketplace listings increase by 185% year-on-year. Transfer Travel, an international online marketplace, allows users to buy and sell holiday plans that others are unable to attend, a concept described as the 'Vinted of travel' or 'eBay of travel'.

Over £7 million worth of travel bookings have been listed on Transfer Travel this year alone. The platform enables sellers to recoup some of the cost of unused trips, while buyers can secure significant savings, typically ranging from 40% to 70%. In the past month, the average saving for buyers on the platform has been around 62%.

Users can either purchase a listing at its set price or attempt to haggle for a lower price, especially if the travel date is approaching. Once a purchase is made, the seller has 72 hours to complete the name transfer and documentation for the booking. The buyer then assumes ownership of the trip under their name.

Despite the potential for substantial savings, the detail provided about listings is dependent on the seller, a characteristic similar to peer-to-peer marketplaces. Additionally, the platform currently does not support bookings for children, requiring families to search for bookings under an 'adult' category.

Transfer Travel actively engages with its user community through social media, including TikTok Live sessions, to highlight top deals, offer exclusive discounts, and showcase new listings. The platform also integrates with Google Flights' API to help users find complementary flights for their purchased holiday packages.

One notable success story involves a couple from South Wales who faced losing £9,000 on a cruise they could no longer take due to a sudden health concern. With no refund from the provider and their insurance not covering the situation, their son listed the cruise on Transfer Travel. The booking was sold for £3,000 just days before the final transfer deadline, allowing the couple to recover a portion of their investment.

Another user, Kirsten Crocker from the US, discovered Transfer Travel through an Instagram Reel and secured two first-class return train tickets from London to Glasgow for £150, down from the original £240 price. This spontaneous purchase allowed her family to add a first-class rail experience to their UK trip.

Experts suggest that as travel costs continue to rise, the resale market is evolving from a mere fallback option for unexpected cancellations to a tool for discovering new travel opportunities and making previously out-of-reach experiences accessible at a reduced cost.
