Oil Prices Drop Sharply, Offering Motorists Relief at the Pump

Oil prices have fallen back towards $70 a barrel, marking a significant decrease in fuel costs for consumers, including a record drop in diesel prices.

Brent crude reached a low of $70.14, the lowest point since late February before the outbreak of war in the Middle East caused prices to surge as high as $126. The recent decline is attributed to an increase in oil supply, bolstered by more tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz and a tentative peace deal between the United States and Iran.

These market shifts have translated into lower prices at the pump. According to the RAC, the average price of diesel decreased by nearly 17 pence per liter in June, reaching 167.14 pence. This represents the largest monthly drop for diesel since records began in 2000. Petrol prices also saw a reduction, falling by nearly 8 pence per liter to 151.40 pence. Consequently, the cost to fill a tank of diesel is now more than £9 less than it was at the beginning of June.

Despite the recent decreases, fuel prices remain higher than pre-conflict levels. "We're still some way off those levels," stated Simon Williams, RAC head of policy. He added that while petrol is expected to drop below 150 pence soon and diesel below 160 pence, a return to pre-conflict prices would necessitate further reductions in the price of oil.
