NYC Candy Stores Thrive Amidst Economic Downturn and Rising Costs

New candy stores are opening across New York City, bucking a trend of low consumer confidence. These businesses are navigating increased wholesale prices and global supply chain challenges to meet demand.

Cat Cirino launched Candor Candy's in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood in March. To supplement revenue, she also offers pantry items like granola, rice, soft drinks, and beef jerky from independent producers. However, her core product, candy, benefits from a long shelf life and the ability to be stored at room temperature. The pick-and-mix model, where customers select their own items, also reduces labor.

Despite these advantages, challenges persist. Wholesale prices have risen due to President Trump's import tariffs and increased global transportation costs, partly linked to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran and higher fuel prices. One shop owner noted that a Hershey chocolate bar, which cost around 62 cents before the pandemic, now exceeds a dollar. This is partly because cocoa beans, essential for American brands like Hershey's, are sourced internationally. A United Kingdom-based supplier reportedly ceased shipping to the U.S. altogether, having incurred excessive losses from customs fees.

Nonetheless, many shop owners have absorbed most of these cost increases. Sales are reportedly up, with customers seeking small comforts during uncertain economic times. "A little candy goes a long way," one proprietor observed. The interior of Economy Candy's shop
