Nike Share Price Tumbles Amid Fierce Sneaker Competition

Nike's share price has experienced a significant decline, dropping by more than a third so far this year and falling nearly three-quarters since 2021. The athletic wear company's stock is currently trading at $41, a sharp decrease from its previous highs.

This downturn is largely attributed to Nike's struggles in the highly competitive global sneaker market, where it has seen its sales growth falter. German rival Adidas has emerged as a leading force in this arena, with its advanced running shoes notably worn by the winners of this year's London Marathon.

Nike is set to release its fourth-quarter financial results on Thursday, a performance that analysts suggest may be met with a positive reception due to lowered expectations. Brokerage firm AJ Bell noted that "expectations have been set sufficiently low for a positive reception."

Recent strategic moves include the appointment of David Denton, formerly of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, as Nike's new finance chief. His mandate includes accelerating operations, maintaining close connections with athletes and consumers, and improving overall consistency.

Investors will be closely watching for signs of profit margin recovery and "a credible path to sustainable sales growth" in the upcoming report, according to AJ Bell. Analysts project that Nike's sales for the past year remained flat at approximately $46 billion, with net profit estimated to have decreased by $1 billion to $2.2 billion.
