French telecoms tycoon Xavier Niel has become Vodafone's largest shareholder by purchasing a 16.2% stake from UAE-based E&.
French telecoms tycoon Xavier Niel has become Vodafone's largest shareholder, having acquired a 16.2% stake in the company. The acquisition was made through Niel's family investment vehicle, Vega, from the United Arab Emirates telecom group E&.
Niel described Vodafone as a "compelling investment opportunity," citing its quality assets, strong brands, leadership positions, and diversified geographic footprint. The deal has fueled speculation about a potential future takeover bid, with analysts at New Street Research noting that Niel's strategy often involves acquiring significant stakes, exerting influence, and potentially seeking full control over time.
However, a source close to Niel stated that there are no immediate intentions to take over Vodafone. The source emphasized that Niel aims to be a supportive, long-term shareholder, while acknowledging that "there’s always room for improvement."
Following the announcement, Vodafone shares saw a notable increase of 12.6%, contributing to a nearly 35% gain over the past twelve months. The company, which is currently undergoing a transformation led by chief executive Margherita Della Valle, welcomed Niel's investment. A Vodafone spokesperson commented, "We know the Niel family group well and look forward to engaging with them as a supportive, long-term shareholder."
Xavier Niel, 58, is a prominent figure in the European telecommunications industry and has previously advocated for consolidation within the sector. His partner, Delphine Arnault, is the daughter of LVMH chief Bernard Arnault.
