New York Yankees Secure $2.6 Billion Financing Deal with Apollo Sports Capital
The agreement aims to fuel growth for the MLB franchise and its related businesses while keeping the Steinbrenner family in control.
The New York Yankees have announced a $2.6 billion financing agreement with Apollo Sports Capital, a deal intended to provide capital for growth and strategic opportunities for the Major League Baseball team and its associated enterprises.
The transaction, which combines credit and equity, is one of the largest private capital infusions into a baseball franchise in recent years and is expected to close soon. As part of the agreement, Al Tylis, CEO of Apollo Sports Capital, will join the board of Yankee Global Enterprises, the holding company for the Yankees, which also owns stakes in the YES Network, Legends Hospitality, New York City FC, and Italy's AC Milan.
Hal Steinbrenner will maintain his role as managing general partner and the team's MLB control person. "We welcome Apollo to the Yankees family," Steinbrenner said in a statement. "We are continually seeking ways to strengthen our positioning, and this partnership allows us to explore pursuing strategic opportunities."
Tylis expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "We look forward to supporting the organization’s continued pursuit of excellence and the championship standard that has long been the hallmark of the New York Yankees."
The financing comes at a time when franchise values across professional sports are increasing. Major League Baseball regulations limit any single private equity fund to a 15% ownership stake in a club. Forbes recently valued the Yankees at $8.5 billion. Apollo Sports Capital is part of Apollo Global Management, which manages approximately $1.05 trillion in assets and has been expanding its sports portfolio, including a controlling stake in Spanish club Atlético Madrid.
The Steinbrenner family has owned the Yankees since 1973 when George Steinbrenner led a group that purchased the team for $10 million. This new deal provides the Yankees with increased financial flexibility as they pursue future endeavors.
