Miyoko's Creamery Vegan Butter Recalled Due to Mold and E. coli Contamination

Prosperity Organic Foods, Inc. initiated a voluntary recall on September 11 for Miyoko’s Creamery European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter, citing concerns over potential contamination. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that the recall affects 1,304 cases of the vegan butter.

The contamination may include yeast, mold, and E. coli, a bacterium that can cause severe intestinal infections. The FDA has classified this recall as Class II, indicating that consumption of the product could lead to temporary or medically reversible health problems. As of the recall announcement, no illnesses had been reported in connection with the affected product.

The recalled butter was distributed to 10 states: Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin. Consumers are advised not to consume the product and to either discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The specific product involved has a UPC number of 857554005773 and lot number 07871, with a best-by date of November 5, 2026. The butter is packaged in an 8oz (227g) unit, wrapped in wax paper and sold in a rectangular container, often in a six-piece pack.

E. coli infections typically occur through the consumption of contaminated food or water. Symptoms can include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fever. While most infections resolve within a few days, severe cases can lead to dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and, in rare instances, can be fatal. Individuals with weakened immune systems, young children, and older adults are at higher risk for complications.

Molds, commonly found on high-moisture foods like fruits and dairy products, can also pose health risks. Ingesting mold can cause gastrointestinal distress. Some molds produce mycotoxins, which can lead to more serious health issues, including organ failure and certain cancers. While fatal mold poisoning is rare, it is a concern, particularly for vulnerable populations. Yeast contamination can also cause digestive discomfort, and in severely immunocompromised individuals, can lead to rare but dangerous fungal infections.
