Mikan Bakery Draws Crowds With Japanese-Inspired Treats and Orange Theme

Mikan Bakery, a new Japanese bakery in Los Angeles, has quickly become a popular destination since its opening in early July, attracting customers with its Japanese-inspired pastries, specialty matcha beverages, and a distinct orange motif. The bakery is the latest venture from Tomonori “Tomo” Takahashi, the founder and CEO of the JINYA ramen chain.

Takahashi, who was born and raised in Japan, established his first JINYA restaurant in Tokyo in 2000 before launching the ramen chain's first U.S. location in Studio City in 2010. The name "Mikan," meaning mandarin orange, was inspired by the neighborhood where Takahashi grew up, which was characterized by numerous orange trees. This influence is evident throughout Mikan Bakery, from its citrus-hued decor to menu items like the Mikan Matcha, Mikan Tonic, and various orange-flavored desserts.

Since its debut, Mikan Bakery has generated significant attention. Staff reported that the bakery experienced heavy crowds during its initial weeks, with lines of customers extending out the door.

Behind the scenes, the bakery's staff prepares fresh breads, sandwiches, and Japanese pastries daily. Signature offerings include the Mikan Cube, a dessert featuring house-made orange custard and orange whip, topped with candied oranges. The strawberry fruit sandwich, made with soft bread and light cream, is also a recommended item. Other popular selections are the sausage shio pan, corn shio pan, banana matcha, sesame latte, and Matcha Grey.

Customers have expressed positive feedback regarding the bakery's matcha, ambiance, and unique menu. Some have likened the experience to visiting Japan for authentic Japanese cuisine and high-quality matcha, with some patrons returning multiple times shortly after their initial visit.
