Michael O'Leary Set for Potential $170 Million Payout in Ryanair Contract Extension

Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O'Leary is in line for a potential payday of up to €153 million ($170 million) following an extension of his contract with the budget airline until April 2032. The 65-year-old leader will be granted lucrative share options, contingent on him remaining with the company and the achievement of significant financial milestones.

These incentives are tied to two ambitious targets: either Ryanair achieving an annual profit of €4 billion or its share price exceeding €42 for 28 consecutive days. "Achievement of these very ambitious targets would create substantial additional value for all Ryanair shareholders," the airline stated.

O'Leary has been at the helm of Ryanair since 1994, overseeing its transformation from a small regional carrier into Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers. In the most recent full year, Ryanair reported a record post-tax profit of €2.26 billion. As of the previous day's close, the airline's share price stood at €25.72.

This new contract follows a previous share option scheme that is expected to net O'Leary as much as €100 million after Ryanair met a share price target. O'Leary has previously commented that such payouts represent good value when compared to the compensation of top athletes.

Details regarding O'Leary's remuneration, which currently consists of a "modest annual salary and a capped annual bonus," will be presented for shareholder approval at the company's annual general meeting in September.
