Meta Platforms Announces $70 Billion AI Fundraising Drive
The tech giant plans its largest-ever share sale to finance its aggressive expansion into artificial intelligence.
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has initiated a significant fundraising effort, aiming to raise approximately £70 billion (around $85 billion) through its largest-ever sale of new shares to investors.
The substantial capital raise is intended to bankroll Meta's ambitious expansion into the field of artificial intelligence. This move comes amid a broader trend of major technology companies seeking billions of dollars to fund their AI initiatives, even as concerns about the high costs and potential market volatility persist.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq index has seen a 5 percent decline since reaching a record high earlier this month, reflecting investor anxieties about the sustainability of the current AI boom.
Meta's shares experienced a 7 percent drop on Thursday. This decline occurred despite the company reporting strong third-quarter results, which were overshadowed by a warning that it anticipates needing to raise 'hundreds of billions of dollars' in the coming years to support its AI development plans.
The social media giant's fundraising efforts have reportedly garnered support from industry players such as Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Broadcom, who have agreed to purchase close to £4 billion of Meta's stock.
A Meta spokesperson stated that the company's investments in AI are already yielding positive results, citing increased user engagement, improved advertising performance, and enhanced monetization as tangible returns.
Meta has been directing significant financial resources toward acquiring advanced chips and building data centers, crucial infrastructure for competing in the AI landscape with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. The company's shares saw a further 0.3 percent slide yesterday.
