Mercedes-Benz Unveils Revamped GLA SUV with Extended Electric Range
The German automaker's compact SUV enters its third generation with a new electric powertrain option offering up to 408 miles on a single charge.
Mercedes-Benz has introduced a significantly updated GLA compact SUV, now offering both electric and hybrid powertrains alongside traditional gasoline options. The revamped model, entering its third generation, aims to enhance its appeal in the competitive luxury compact segment.
The 2026 GLA is built on Mercedes' new compact 'MMA' architecture, featuring updated interior and exterior design cues. The exterior presents a more mature look with a wider rear track, muscular shoulders, and a lower, wider stance compared to its predecessor. The front is characterized by a large, blanked-off grille, typically reserved for larger Mercedes models, enhanced with animated micro-LED lighting and illuminated stars.
Inside, the GLA adopts a minimalist design centered around a sweeping MBUX Superscreen that extends across the dashboard, measuring nearly 40 inches. This display integrates AI voice assistance to manage the vehicle's extensive infotainment features. The cabin also includes circular sporty air vents, concave door panels, a floating center console, and an optional Burmester 3D surround-sound system. A panoramic roof, divided into seven individually controllable segments, offers customizable light and visibility for occupants.
The electric GLA offers three variants: the GLA 200 with a 58kWh battery, the GLA 250+ with an 85kWh battery, and the GLA 350 4MATIC, also with a 58kWh battery. The GLA 250+ variant boasts a maximum electric range of 408 miles on a single charge. The GLA 350 delivers 349 horsepower with a 0-to-62 mph acceleration time of 5.4 seconds. Another electric model with a 71kWh battery is slated for early 2027. The GLA's charging capabilities allow for up to 168 miles of range to be added in just ten minutes, with charging speeds reaching up to 320kW.
A hybrid version is scheduled for launch in early 2027, featuring an all-new electrified 1.5-liter turbo engine paired with a 22kW electric motor. This hybrid model is expected to produce 187 horsepower and achieve approximately 50 miles per gallon. Notably, Mercedes will not offer a diesel variant of the new GLA, despite the previous diesel model's popularity.
Cargo space in the new GLA is 410 liters, an increase of 70 liters over the outgoing model. With the rear seats folded (split 40/20/20), the capacity expands to 1,400 liters. The electric versions also include a 107-liter front trunk, or 'frunk'.
While official pricing has not yet been confirmed, the GLA is anticipated to be priced around £45,000, comparable to the new CLA. The updated GLA will be available with four trim levels, including AMG Line and AMG Plus options for a sportier aesthetic. The new GLA model is expected to arrive in showrooms within a few months, with the hybrid variant following next year.
