Melbourne Cafe Sells Every Menu Item for $4
The Heart of Carlton, opened in 2017, aims to offer quality food at an exceptionally low, fixed price.
A cafe in Melbourne, Australia, is drawing attention for its uniquely low pricing, with every item on its menu costing just $4.
The Heart of Carlton, located on Elgin Street and opened in 2017 by husband-and-wife owners Michael and Nadeen Kelly, has become a local favorite. Situated near Carlton's Lygon Street restaurant precinct and the Nova Cinema, the cafe specializes in offering quality food at what it describes as an "unbelievably low price." This includes baguettes, pasta, curries, toasties, smoothies, and coffee, all priced at $4.
Micheal Kelly crafts the cafe's furniture by hand, while Nadeen Kelly prepares all the food on-site. The owners attribute their ability to maintain these low prices to a philosophy that "the world can be cruel." The establishment also functions as a 1920s Paris-inspired reading room, featuring a collection of free books and providing a platform for local musicians to perform.
The cafe operates Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. It often sees a crowd, with evenings frequently filled with locals, patrons, passers-by, and tourists enjoying the free entertainment outside.
The $4 pricing has been met with positive reactions from locals, who frequently praise the owners on social media for their kindness and service.
In comparison, other Melbourne cafes have seen price increases. Piccante, a cafe in Fitzroy North owned by the Mauro family since 2018, recently raised its prices. A regular coffee there now costs $5, regardless of milk type. Eggs on sourdough are priced at $12, and prices in other Melbourne suburbs like Richmond or South Yarra can reportedly reach $22 for similar items. Piccante also offers a burger and beer deal for $15.
The Heart of Carlton's unique approach to pricing and its dual role as a community space have contributed to its popularity among Melbourne residents.
