McDonald's Unveils $8.5 Billion Global Modernization Plan
The fast-food giant will invest in restaurant upgrades, new menu items, and technology over the next decade.
McDonald's announced Wednesday a sweeping $8.5 billion investment to modernize its restaurants worldwide, a plan expected to extend through 2036. The initiative aims to enhance the customer experience, improve operational efficiency, and adapt to evolving consumer preferences.
The modernization efforts will encompass several key areas, including restaurant design, menu innovation, and technological integration. Upgrades will feature improved kitchen layouts, more visible coffee preparation areas, larger play areas for children, and dedicated lockers for delivery orders. The company is also focused on improving order accuracy, planning to expand the use of scales to 20,000 restaurants globally by 2028, a tool already present in 10,000 locations.
Technology will play a significant role in the modernization, with an accelerated deployment of the ArchIQ system, developed in partnership with Google. This AI-powered system is designed to boost order accuracy and automate tasks such as inventory management and staff scheduling.
Menu development is also a priority, with McDonald's planning to introduce grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps. The company will also experiment with new items like egg bites and bowls, responding to a growing demand for healthier and more protein-rich options. This strategic shift is partly influenced by the increasing use of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, which Sky Anderson, president of McDonald’s USA, noted are used by approximately 30 million Americans. These customers, along with an additional 60 million Americans actively seeking more protein, represent a significant market opportunity.
"This is an opportunity. We need to keep giving them more reasons to make McDonald’s their first choice," Anderson stated at McDonald’s investor day.
The investment plan will also involve McDonald's franchisees, who typically bear significant costs for store remodels. While franchisees have historically spent up to $450,000 per decade on required updates, the new plan requires an additional $800,000 investment. McDonald's has committed to contributing a portion of this additional cost.
The company's investment underscores a commitment to adapting its global footprint to meet contemporary consumer demands for convenience, health-conscious choices, and technological integration.
