McDonald's Faces Customer Backlash Over Happy Meal Toy Surcharge

McDonald's has introduced an unannounced change to its Happy Meal offerings, leading to customer dissatisfaction and accusations of 'shrinkflation.' Patrons have reported being charged an additional fee, sometimes as much as $1.79, for specific toys included with the children's meals.

Traditionally, Happy Meals have always included a toy at no extra cost. However, a recent promotion featuring limited-edition FIFA World Cup-themed Squishmallows plush toys has altered this practice at some locations. Customers expressed surprise and frustration on social media platforms like Reddit, with one user stating, "Never in my life have I ever had to pay extra for a Happy Meal toy to be included."

Some customers initially suspected the extra charge was an employee error or a localized decision by individual franchises. Many others reported no such charge on their own orders, further fueling speculation. McDonald's customer service reportedly clarified that the surcharge was tied to the special, collectible nature of the FIFA promotional toys. These limited-edition items, according to the company, carry an added cost compared to standard Happy Meal toys.

As a gesture of goodwill, McDonald's reportedly offered the customer who raised the issue 10,000 MyMcDonald’s Rewards points. The company apologized that the surcharge had not been clearly communicated during the purchase.

This promotion, which began in early June, offers one of 23 different Squishmallows plushies with each Happy Meal, along with a scannable code to unlock a digital game. The promotion is in partnership with the FIFA World Cup 26. The fast-food giant has also recently featured other themed meals and toys, including a Kpop Demon Hunters meal and items related to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The additional cost for collectible toys has raised concerns among consumers about the evolving value proposition of the Happy Meal and whether future promotions might also involve added expenses for toys. Some suggested that a more transparent approach would be to offer the meal by default and allow customers to opt in to purchasing a toy separately.
