McDonald's Faces Backlash Over Happy Meal Toy Upcharge

McDonald's is facing customer discontent after some locations began charging an additional fee for promotional toys included in Happy Meals. The issue came to light when a customer shared on Reddit that they were charged $1.79 extra for a World Cup-themed Squishmallow plush, a deviation from the standard Happy Meal inclusion of a toy at no extra cost.

A typical Happy Meal includes an entree, a side, a drink, and a toy. However, this customer reported being charged an additional amount for the limited-time FIFA promotional toy, sparking questions about "shrinkflation" and new pricing strategies. While Happy Meal prices vary by region, promotional toys have historically been included without an added surcharge.

The customer, whose order was placed at an undisclosed Canadian location, initially believed the charge was an error and contacted McDonald's customer service. The company responded via email, stating that while standard Happy Meal toys are included, the promotional FIFA toys are part of a special campaign with an associated added cost. They acknowledged that this was not clearly communicated at the time of purchase and, as a gesture of goodwill, credited the customer's account with 10,000 MyMcDonald’s Rewards points.

This policy has led to frustration, with some customers feeling that children will either not receive a toy or parents will have to pay more for a "complete" Happy Meal. Other users on the platform expressed disbelief, noting they had not encountered such charges and questioning the transparency of the upcharge.

Further clarification from the original poster indicated that the charge appeared to be implemented at a single franchise location rather than company-wide. However, McDonald's maintained that the charge was appropriate for the promotional item. Some customers speculated that this could signal future price increases for promotional items.

One potential explanation offered by a McDonald's employee suggested that the upcharge may have been an inadvertent charge for collectible cups associated with the FIFA promotion, due to poor sales of a separate "adult collectible cup." These cups feature prominent soccer stars like David Beckham, Thierry Henry, and Christian Pulisic.

McDonald's recently partnered with Squishmallow to create 23 collectible plush toys featuring FIFA mascots for its Happy Meal promotion. Despite the online criticism, some commenters also noted concerns about the quality of the Squishmallow toys themselves.

In related news, the fast-food chain has seen previous viral trends, including a method shared by a customer for purchasing a Happy Meal at a significantly reduced price.
