Marston's Brewery Faces Potential Closure in Historic Brewing Town
Carlsberg Britvic proposes shutting the Burton-upon-Trent facility, citing declining cask ale volumes.
Carlsberg Britvic has revealed plans to close the Marston's Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent, a town with centuries-old ties to the brewing industry. The company also proposes shutting its primary logistics operation at the same site next summer. The proposal comes as the company states that UK cask ale volumes have fallen by more than half in less than a decade, a trend it expects to continue.
Priority brands such as Hobgoblin, McEwan's, and Brooklyn are expected to remain part of the company's portfolio, though their future brewing locations are not yet clear. Burton-upon-Trent, historically known as the "beer capital of England," once hosted over 30 breweries, with its brewing heritage dating back to the 11th century.
Carlsberg Britvic informed employees and trade union representatives of the proposal on Thursday. CEO Paul Davies emphasized that the decision is not a reflection on the brewery's staff and that efforts will be made to support them through the period of uncertainty. The Marston's Brewery and its logistics operation are expected to continue functioning during a transition period while the company consults on the detailed plans.
Davies noted the importance of focusing the company's portfolio on areas of current consumer demand and growth. He also stated that efforts would be made to ensure smaller, beloved ale brands can thrive under specialist or local ownership in the future. The company is known for its distinctive Burton beer, characterized by an earthy aroma often referred to as "Burton snatch," attributed to the town's unique underground gypsum deposits.
This potential closure follows a trend of consolidation in the brewing sector. Banks's Brewery previously moved its production out of Wolverhampton in 2025 after 150 years, relocating to Burton. Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company, headquartered in Wolverhampton, had announced a company restructuring in 2024 that included the potential closure of the Burton facility.
