Marks & Spencer Investors to Scrutinize Cyber Attack Recovery and Ocado Partnership

Investors are set to question Marks & Spencer's leadership this week regarding the company's recovery from a substantial cyber attack that occurred last year. The breach led to a nearly two-month period where M&S was unable to operate its online sales channels, prompting some customers to shift their purchases to rival retailers such as Next.

Despite the disruption, Chief Executive Stuart Machin indicated last month that the attack has instilled a "renewed sense of purpose" within the business, and expressed confidence that profits will resume growth in the current financial year. The company reported a 24 percent decrease in profits, amounting to £671 million, directly attributed to the cyber incident which severely impacted sales in its fashion and beauty divisions. Nevertheless, overall sales for the year ending March 28 saw a 2 percent increase, reaching £14.2 billion.

During the retailer's annual general meeting, shareholders may also seek updates from Machin and Chairman Archie Norman concerning their outlook for Ocado Retail. This online grocery venture, co-owned by M&S and the robotics firm Ocado, has experienced an increase in sales following the integration of more M&S products onto its digital platform. However, investor concerns persist due to a post-pandemic trend of shoppers returning to physical supermarkets.

Lale Akoner, global market strategist for investment platform Etoro, noted that investors will likely utilize the M&S AGM to assess management's ability to sustain the company's re-rating following a strong set of full-year financial results. Key areas of focus are expected to include momentum in the food sector, the progress of recovery in fashion, home, and beauty categories, and the timeline for returning to full operational normalcy after the cyber disruption.
