Marks & Spencer Food Sales Surge Amid Heatwave and World Cup
The retailer achieved its strongest food sales in three years, driven by favorable weather and major sporting events.
Marks & Spencer (M&S) has experienced a significant boost in food sales, marking its strongest performance in three years, according to market research firm Worldpanel. The surge is attributed to a combination of high summer temperatures and the global football tournament.
Over the 12 weeks leading up to July 12, M&S reported a 16% increase in grocery sales, attracting new customers to its stores. This period saw a substantial rise in overall supermarket trips, with shoppers making 497 million visits in the four weeks ending July 12. This represents the highest number of supermarket trips recorded since March 2020.
The favorable weather and the ongoing football competition directly influenced consumer purchasing habits. Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, noted that "sport and sunshine combined to shape shopping habits this month, and England’s run in the tournament had a clear impact on the drinks aisle."
In the broader grocery market, Asda was the only supermarket to experience a sales decline, with a 1% drop to £4.2 billion during the same period. Morrisons saw a modest 1.4% increase in sales, following its private equity acquisition. Budget supermarket Lidl reported the largest growth among grocers, with an 8.6% rise in sales, while its competitor Aldi saw a more subdued increase of 0.7%.
