Marks & Spencer Completes Major Brand Revival, Prepares for London Fashion Week Debut
The retailer, once ousted from the FTSE 100, has seen a dramatic turnaround driven by strategic buying, celebrity endorsements, and popular product lines.
Marks & Spencer (M&S) is set to make its debut at London Fashion Week, marking a significant milestone in the retailer's decade-long journey from a struggling high street staple to a covetable fashion destination.
This September, to commemorate 100 years of selling clothing, M&S will unveil a 'see now, buy now' collection for both womenswear and menswear. The announcement follows a series of high-profile events, including a catwalk show in Ibiza and a runway presentation at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, moments that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
The transformation comes after M&S dropped out of the FTSE 100 in September 2019, facing store closures and a near 20-year low in its share price, reflecting a widespread perception that the brand had lost its direction.
Path to Revival
A turning point began in late 2019 with the appointment of Maddy Evans as head of buying. Her influence, later as womenswear director from 2022, is credited with sharpening the product offering and creating a more fashion-forward selection. This strategic shift helped M&S reclaim its position as the UK's largest womenswear retailer by the end of 2023, earning a re-entry into the FTSE 100.
The retailer's resurgence has been characterized by key pieces that quickly gain popularity, often selling out within days. Notable items include brown suede loafers, priced at £55, which became an unofficial uniform among fashion industry professionals, and the Autograph leather bomber jacket, retailing at £250, praised for its quality and premium appearance.
Celebrity Endorsements and Collaborations
Celebrity involvement has played a crucial role in M&S's revival. Actress Sienna Miller became the face of the brand for its Autumn/Winter 2023 collection and launched a successful second collection. Presenter Claudia Winkleman also fronted a major campaign last year. More recently, actress Gillian Anderson joined as Chief Compliments Officer for the 'Love That' campaign, with its first capsule collection generating over £580,000 in its initial week.
Collaborations have also proven successful, such as the sell-out partnership with designer Bella Freud in October 2024, featuring items like a £99 silk shirt and slogan jumpers.
Expanded Offerings and Shopping Experience
Improvements to both in-store and online shopping experiences have complemented the product strategy. M&S has also significantly expanded its third-party brand partnerships, now stocking over 100 brands across fashion, beauty, and sportswear, including labels like Hush, Whistles, and Jigsaw. This strategy aims to attract a broader demographic while offering a mix of accessible trends and quality comparable to higher-end brands like COS and Massimo Dutti, at more affordable price points.
The retailer has seen success across various product categories. Its denim line, with prices starting at £24, has been particularly popular, with M&S reporting sales of the equivalent of ten pairs of jeans per minute. Other popular items include wide-leg jeans, a £35 cross-body bag inspired by a Celine design, and a £150 drop-waist dress from its owned brand Jaeger. The woven faux-leather co-ord, featuring a £40 blazer and a £32 mini skirt, reportedly attracted buyers averaging 12 years younger than the traditional M&S customer, indicating the brand's success in appealing to a new generation.
