Man Charged After Alleged 'Offensive Act' in Sydney's Salesforce Tower Lobby
Police responded to an incident involving human waste in the lobby of Australia's tallest commercial building, leading to an arrest and charges.
A 35-year-old man has been charged following an incident involving human faeces in the lobby of Sydney's Salesforce Tower, the city's tallest commercial building. Police were called to the George Street skyscraper on Monday afternoon after reports of an offensive act near the elevators.
The man was arrested late Tuesday night at Circular Quay Ferry Wharf and taken to Day Street Police Station. He faces charges including behaving in an offensive manner in or near a public place, destroying or damaging property, stalking/intimidation, and breaching bail. He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
Completed in late 2022, the 263-meter, 55-story Salesforce Tower is a prominent feature of Sydney's Central Business District. Global software company Salesforce holds naming rights and occupies 13 floors of the building. In February, Singapore-listed OUE REIT acquired a 19.9 percent interest in the tower.
Major tenants in the building include TikTok and JLL. The tower's occupancy rate, which was 99.2 percent in December, is considered an indicator of Sydney's office market health.
Salesforce, which is transitioning to an AI-first strategy with new generative tools and autonomous software, has recently undergone layoffs. Reports have linked these workforce reductions to automation initiatives, though criticism suggests they may also be masking cost-cutting measures following previous over-hiring.
Rumors that the incident was a 'dirty protest' have circulated, but sources indicated the alleged perpetrator did not appear to be an office worker. The company was contacted for comment regarding how the man gained access to the premises, whether an internal investigation would be conducted, and if there was a security lapse.
