Luxury Jewelry Market Sees Surge in Resale as Consumers Seek Value

The global secondhand market is experiencing significant growth, with the luxury jewelry sector following a broader trend of consumers prioritizing value. The resale market is projected to reach $393 billion by 2030, growing at twice the pace of the overall apparel market, according to ThredUp's 2026 Resale Report.

Industry insiders note that luxury jewelry sales are shifting towards the pre-owned market as repeated price hikes and soaring gold prices prompt consumers to seek authenticated pieces at lower costs. Brandon Aversano, CEO of The Alloy Market, observed that consumers are becoming more intentional with their spending on luxury items. "Buying pre-owned is no longer viewed as a compromise," Aversano told the Daily Mail. "It's increasingly seen as a smarter, more intentional way to shop."

The Alloy Market's own growth illustrates this changing consumer behavior. After transitioning from platforms like eBay and Poshmark to its own direct marketplace, the company anticipates a fivefold increase in revenue between 2025 and 2026, with a projected surge of over 1,000 percent in unique customers. The company's average order value has risen to between $300 and $500, and its repeat customer rate has reached double digits.

This trend is partly a response to luxury brands implementing significant price increases in recent years, making iconic jewelry pieces less accessible. Aversano estimates that pre-owned fine jewelry can be 75 to 325 percent less expensive than comparable new items, with retail markups often ranging from 200 to 500 percent. This price disparity is encouraging buyers to reconsider the premium associated with purchasing directly from brands.

Shoppers are now exploring resale marketplaces to compare brands and find better value, moving beyond the limitations of single boutiques. According to Aversano, consumers are better informed than in the past, valuing authentication, condition, transparent pricing, and detailed purchase information. They are also increasingly open to acquiring timeless pieces that retain their value rather than focusing solely on new collections.

Brands such as Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, David Yurman, and Rolex watches are seeing strong demand in the resale market. Beyond branded luxury items, vintage and estate jewelry without famous designer names is also attracting consumers. These pieces often offer high-quality craftsmanship and precious metals at substantially lower prices. Classic items like tennis bracelets, gold chains, bangles, diamond stud earrings, and charm necklaces remain popular due to their enduring style.

Aversano believes that evolving consumer attitudes have played as significant a role as rising luxury prices in driving the shift to resale. Improvements in authentication standards, professional inspections, secure shipping, and buyer protections have made purchasing pre-owned jewelry feel considerably safer. For those considering secondhand luxury jewelry, Aversano recommends prioritizing reputable retailers that authenticate items and clearly disclose their condition, inspection process, and return policies.
