Luxury Cruise Ship Abandons 3.5-Year Voyage Due to Soaring Fuel Costs
The Villa Vie Odyssey, on a journey around the world, is stranded in Cambodia as operational costs become unsustainable.
The Villa Vie Odyssey, a luxury cruise ship on a planned 3.5-year voyage around the globe, has suspended its operations due to drastically increased fuel costs, leaving its passengers stranded in Cambodia. The US-based operator announced the suspension Tuesday, citing a dramatic rise in expenses that have made continuing the journey financially untenable.
The vessel, which can accommodate up to 650 passengers, departed Belfast in October 2024. It was over 750 days into its circumnavigation, with plans to visit nearly 150 countries, when the decision to halt the voyage was made. The ship is equipped with multiple amenities, including bars, restaurants, a pool deck, and a pickleball court.
Global fuel prices have surged significantly since the start of the Iran war earlier this year. According to the ship's operator, the monthly fuel cost per cabin in parts of Asia has escalated from $1,800 to as much as $8,000. The company stated that it had implemented measures to mitigate these costs, such as slowing the ship's itinerary and extending stays in port, but these efforts were insufficient to offset the extraordinary increase.
"Passing the full increase on to residents is not a realistic solution," the operator said in a statement. The company plans to spend the next 60 days focusing on restructuring and recapitalization, though it cautioned that "no outcome is assured."
Approximately 200 passengers were on board when the ship announced its suspension and began disembarkation plans in Cambodia. The operator is reportedly working with passengers to arrange temporary living accommodations. The ship's cabins are offered as permanent residences ranging from $120,000 to $440,000, or for rent starting at $3,500 per month.
This is not the first disruption for the Villa Vie Odyssey. Its departure from Belfast was delayed for months due to necessary repairs, which also resulted in passengers being stranded and cost the company millions of pounds.
