Liverpool Supporters Group Seeks Clarity on Bezos-Led Investment Plans
Spirit of Shankly raises questions regarding the potential minority stake purchase by a consortium including Jeff Bezos.
A prominent Liverpool supporters group, Spirit of Shankly, has formally requested clarity from the club's owners regarding a proposed minority investment that reportedly includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The group is seeking to understand the implications of a potential 30 percent stake acquisition, valued at approximately £1.35 billion, by a consortium that also includes Facebook co-owner Eduardo Saverin and former Queens Park Rangers chairman Amit Bhatia.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's current owners, would retain control of the club if the deal is finalized. However, Spirit of Shankly has expressed concerns about the long-term future and fan impact. In a statement released by the group, they outlined several key questions posed to the club at the end of July. These inquiries focus on the expected timeline for the sale, the rights and involvement of the new investors, including board seats and financial returns, and whether this is part of a larger divestment strategy.
The supporters' group also inquired about the due diligence being conducted on the potential investors, emphasizing the importance of understanding their plans and motivations. Spirit of Shankly reiterated that the ownership and control of Liverpool Football Club are fundamental to its supporters, particularly given past events that led to FSG's acquisition of the club. They noted that similar investments at other clubs have led to significant changes in club operations and decision-making.
According to reports, the club informed Spirit of Shankly that a meeting would be arranged with the supporters' board if and when the potential deal becomes more formal. Sources close to FSG and the deal indicate that negotiations are ongoing, but no agreement has been reached as of August 12, 2026.
