Little Debbie's Oatmeal Creme Pie: A Depression-Era Treat's Enduring Legacy
The iconic snack cake, born from humble beginnings during the Great Depression, remains a top seller for the family-run bakery over 90 years later.
The Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pie, a snack that originated during the Great Depression, continues to be a leading seller for McKee Foods more than nine decades after its creation. This enduring popularity highlights the treat's ability to transcend generations and its significance in the history of the family-run bakery.
The Oatmeal Creme Pie was the first snack cake produced under the Little Debbie brand, with its roots tracing back to 1935. O.D. McKee developed the treat after selling baked goods from his 1928 Whippet. The company's history notes that in 1934, the McKees purchased a bakery near Chattanooga, Tennessee, using their family car as collateral due to financial constraints. At the time, money was so scarce that the family lived behind a sheet in the back of the bakery.
By the 1960s, the brand Little Debbie, named after McKee's granddaughter, was established. The company proclaims on its website that the Oatmeal Creme Pie is “the snack that started it all.” Introduced in family packs for 49 cents, the initial run saw more than 14 million cakes sold within 10 months. By 1964, the product line had expanded to 14 varieties, including the popular Nutty Buddy wafer bars and Swiss Cake Rolls.
Mckee Foods, still headquartered in Tennessee, describes itself as “America’s largest family bakery.” Today, the company produces over 75 Little Debbie products, with Oatmeal Creme Pies, Swiss Rolls, and Nutty Buddy wafer bars consistently being its most popular items. Combined, more than 200 million cartons of these three products are sold annually.
The company remains family-run, with the fourth generation of the McKee family involved in the business. Debbie McKee-Fowler serves as the chair of the McKee Foods Board of Directors.
Mckee Foods expressed pride in the continued success of the Oatmeal Creme Pie and its other products, stating that their success reflects a product that consumers genuinely love. The company noted that the Oatmeal Creme Pie has been a part of family gatherings and shared moments for over 60 years. This family-run approach, they believe, keeps them grounded in their core values.
According to McKee Foods, the Oatmeal Creme Pie's lasting appeal lies in its flavor profile, which resonates across different demographics and generations. The spiced cookies evoke a sense of home-baked oatmeal cookies, while the sweet crème filling adds a playful element for younger consumers. The company views it as a universally appealing treat.
A customer anecdote shared by McKee Foods illustrates the nostalgic connection many have with the Oatmeal Creme Pie. The customer recalled eating one every time he went fishing with his grandfather, and now, each pie brings back fond memories of those trips. This sense of nostalgia and comfort, the company states, makes their products more than just a snack for many.
