Kate Spade CEO Aims to Revitalize Brand by Connecting with Gen Z

Kate Spade New York is undergoing a strategic turnaround led by CEO Eva Erdmann, who aims to revitalize the brand by leveraging its heritage and optimistic spirit to connect with Gen Z consumers.

Erdmann, who assumed leadership in the fall of 2024, is tasked with reversing a trend of declining revenue. Her strategy involves streamlining operations and targeting younger demographics who are drawn to the brand's whimsical aesthetic and a sense of nostalgia for the 1990s. To that end, the brand has enlisted contemporary figures such as South African singer Tyla as a brand ambassador, alongside appearances by artists like Ice Spice, Laufey, and Charli D'Amelio in various campaigns.

"Gen Z is the most influential generation ever in history," Erdmann stated, emphasizing her belief in the brand's role in bringing "optimism and joy and lightness" to a world she describes as "heavy and uncertain and fragmented and isolated."

The brand, founded in 1993 with a focus on six handbag designs, has a rich history. It was acquired by Tapestry Inc. in 2017 for $2.4 billion. Erdmann, who previously held leadership roles in the beauty industry, including at L'Oréal, sees significant parallels between beauty and fashion.

"At the end of the day, we're talking about an emotional product, we are talking about brands that are doing more than selling products, we are talking about brands that are bringing a vision to the world, offering a very emotional connection with the consumer," Erdmann explained. She believes her background in consumer packaged goods instilled a discipline of placing the consumer at the center of decision-making and focusing on developing "hero products" that build long-term trust.

Erdmann noted that even before joining Kate Spade, people shared deeply personal stories connected to the brand, such as receiving a handbag for a first job or a graduation. "What was the surprise when I joined is that it's even more than what I thought, and the data confirmed that impression," she said, highlighting the brand's strong awareness and the thousands of letters received monthly from consumers expressing their love for Kate Spade.

Embracing Heritage and Modernity

The brand's turnaround effort is rooted in respecting its origins while adapting for the future. Erdmann emphasized the importance of understanding "the true essence of a brand" to guide present-day decisions. She pointed to Kate Spade's revolutionary approach in the 1990s, which offered women a way to express femininity and ambition simultaneously, a contrast to the more masculine professional attire prevalent at the time.

"What made the brand successful at the beginning, and when you understand that essence [and] vision, then it becomes your compass for everything you do," Erdmann said. The current strategy involves reintroducing the brand's distinctive details and vision from its early years to a new generation.

Strategic Focus and Market Position

In a competitive market, Erdmann highlighted Kate Spade's unique position in catering to young women purchasing their first luxury handbag. The brand's strategy focuses on strengthening its foundation through product development, elevating the in-store and overall consumer experience, reducing reliance on promotions, and investing in talent.

"We've been making some actions today that are impacting the short-term intentionally, because we want to rebuild not only for growth but we want to rebuild for the long-term and for something healthy," Erdmann stated, referencing the closure of unprofitable stores as part of this optimization.

The company is also reinforcing its marketing, design, and consumer insight teams. "One of my convictions is that we have to test before we invest," Erdmann said, explaining that this approach allows for calculated risks and validation of new ideas before significant investment.

Connecting with Gen Z and Beyond

Erdmann views Gen Z as a key demographic, emphasizing their desire for connection and moments of lightness in an anxious world. "This is our positioning, and this is what the Gen Z consumer is looking for today," she said.

While focusing on Gen Z, Erdmann acknowledged the brand's appeal across multiple generations, including Millennials and Gen X. She noted a "halo effect" where initiatives that resonate with Gen Z often lead to increased engagement from other age groups. The current resurgence of 1990s fashion trends aligns with the brand's history, though Erdmann stressed the importance of capturing the meaning and essence of that era rather than just its aesthetic.

As CEO, Erdmann closely monitors both lagging indicators like sales and leading indicators such as brand health metrics, consumer insights, and team engagement. "A brand transformation is first of all a human transformation," she concluded, underscoring the importance of fostering a culture that encourages creativity and passion within the team.
