Kao USA Recalls Luxury Oribe Shampoo Due to Bacteria Contamination
Select lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo sold at Sephora and other retailers are being recalled over the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria.
Kao USA has initiated a voluntary recall of specific batches of its Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo, a high-end hair product endorsed by celebrities, after detecting the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria. The shampoo, which can retail for up to $75, is distributed through retailers including Sephora.
The recall affects 8.5-ounce and 33.8-ounce bottles manufactured between February 21 and February 26, 2026. The company stated that while the bacteria typically poses minimal risk to healthy individuals, those with weakened immune systems or certain pre-existing health conditions may be more vulnerable to infection. Consumers are advised to cease using the affected products immediately.
Kao USA is collaborating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to remove the contaminated products from distribution channels. Retailers and salon partners have been instructed to pull the affected bottles from shelves and arrange for their safe disposal. The recall is specifically limited to three lot numbers.
Owners of the 8.5-ounce bottles should verify the black lot code on the bottom of the container for YR010556. For the 33.8-ounce bottles, the relevant lot numbers are YR010566 or YR010576. Only products bearing these specific codes are included in the recall.
Customers who possess an affected product should discontinue its use and contact Kao USA for a replacement or to report any adverse reactions. An investigation into the origin of the contamination is currently underway.
Pluralibacter gergoviae is described as a rare but clinically relevant bacterium. Dermatologists have noted its occasional presence in cosmetic products due to its resistance to certain common preservatives. The company emphasized that the recall is confined to a small number of production lots and does not encompass the entire product line.
