Jeweler Priced Out of Liverpool Christmas Market Amid Operator Changes
A silversmith reports a near doubling of stall costs, forcing her to skip the event for the first time in five years.
Silversmith Alex Healy will not be returning to Liverpool's Christmas market this year, an event where she has sold her jewelry since 2021. Healy cited a change in market operators and a significant increase in costs as the reasons for her absence, stating that she and other traders feel they are being "priced out."
A new company, Underbelly, has taken over the operation of the market at St George's Hall this year. According to Healy, the cost of running a stall has nearly doubled. She reported paying approximately £6,780, including VAT and electricity, for a chalet last year. This year, the base cost for a chalet has risen to just under £14,000 before additional charges.
Healy also noted that under the new contract, traders are expected to pay extra for services such as water and grey waste disposal, chiller and storage space, and energy supply. She described her previous participation in the market as a "really great place to be," highlighting the sense of community among traders.
Liverpool City Council, which awarded the tender to Underbelly, stated that the markets provide a "cost-effective way for traders to showcase and sell their products." The council added that the new operator manages their own trader arrangements independently. Underbelly has been contacted for comment.
