Jersey Pensioners Face Higher Inflation Driven by Energy and Household Costs

Pensioners in Jersey are experiencing a higher inflation rate than the general population, with costs rising by 4.7% annually. This increase is largely attributed to significant hikes in heating fuel and household service expenses, according to new figures from Statistics Jersey.

The overall inflation rate for the island edged up to 2.8% in June, from 2.7% in March. This figure matches the UK's CPIH measure of inflation for the same period. For pensioners, however, the impact is more pronounced due to the greater weight of heating fuel costs in their specific inflation measure.

Household services emerged as the largest contributor to the overall inflation rate, with prices in this category increasing by 5.6%. This rise accounted for 0.6 percentage points of the island's annual inflation figure. Food prices also continued their upward trend, increasing by 3.5% over the year and contributing 0.4 percentage points to the total inflation.

Specific food items saw notable price jumps, including a 12.7% increase for lamb, an 11.8% rise in milk products, and an 8.7% increase in egg prices. These combined factors are placing a greater financial burden on pensioners.
