Jeff Bezos-Led Consortium Acquires Stake in Liverpool Football Club
Amazon founder's investment group joins Fenway Sports Group in supporting the Premier League club's future growth.
A consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has acquired approximately one-third of Liverpool Football Club, in a deal that values the Premier League team at over $5 billion. Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club's owner since 2010, will retain majority ownership and operational control.
The investment aims to support Liverpool's long-term growth ambitions by integrating expertise from global business, technology, and investment sectors. The consortium partners will collaborate with FSG and the club's leadership to identify opportunities that align with the team's objectives both on and off the pitch.
FSG president Mike Gordon stated that Liverpool's history of long-term strategic decisions continues to attract interest from respected investors. He noted that the consortium shares FSG's long-term vision and appreciation for Liverpool's unique qualities. Their experience is expected to complement the existing foundation at the club.
Amit Bhatia, representing the consortium, expressed pride in investing in Liverpool and deep respect for FSG's ownership and achievements. He emphasized the privilege of partnering with a club of Liverpool's stature and confidence in the club's leadership and continued success.
Liverpool has seen significant financial growth, becoming the top-earning Premier League club for the first time in January and announcing record revenues of £703 million for the 2023-24 financial year. While FSG was not compelled by financial necessity to seek investment, the consortium's extensive reach across global markets, particularly in India and Asia, was a key attraction.
FSG previously sold a minority stake in the club to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity.
