Jeff Bezos in Talks to Invest in Liverpool Football Club

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reportedly engaged in discussions about potentially investing in Liverpool Football Club, according to Sky News reports cited by the Daily Mail. Bezos, the world's fourth-richest man with a net worth of approximately $257 billion, has been approached to join a consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia.

Bhatia's group is reportedly in talks with Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), about making a strategic minority investment in the club. The potential valuation for Liverpool could exceed £4.5 billion ($6 billion) if the deal progresses. FSG acquired the club in 2010 for £300 million and has overseen its success, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League victory.

While FSG has not needed to inject significant personal capital, with figures suggesting around £136 million invested by 2024, the team has largely been self-sufficient. This proposed investment structure would mirror a similar deal from three years ago when FSG sold a small stake to sports investment firm Dynasty.

This is not the first time Bezos has reportedly considered investing in a major sports franchise. He previously explored bids for the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders in the NFL, though neither materialized.

Bhatia, who recently stepped down from his ownership role at Championship side Queens Park Rangers, is spearheading this particular consortium. A spokesperson for Fenway Sports Group confirmed that an investment consortium represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in a minority investment in Liverpool.

FSG's current ownership group includes 33 partners, with John W. Henry as the principal owner. The group has been noted for allowing managers significant autonomy compared to some other club owners. Despite fan desires for greater spending, FSG has historically prioritized financial sustainability, though they sanctioned a record £446 million spending spree in the last transfer window when club revenues allowed for it under Profit & Sustainability Rules.

Liverpool is currently on a pre-season tour in the United States. Manager Andoni Iraola has expressed a need to strengthen the squad, particularly in wide attacking positions and defensive depth, while also emphasizing the desire to retain key players like Alisson and Alexis Mac Allister amidst transfer interest.
