Jeff Bezos Explores Stake in Liverpool FC Amidst Ownership Discussions
The Amazon founder is reportedly considering joining a consortium aiming to invest in the storied English football club, which is currently owned by Fenway Sports Group.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reportedly discussed the possibility of joining a consortium interested in acquiring a stake in Liverpool Football Club. The consortium is led by businessman Amit Bhatia and reportedly funded in part by the family of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owners of Liverpool FC and the Boston Red Sox, are said to be in discussions about the potential minority investment. FSG has confirmed that an investment consortium led by Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in the club.
FSG, which purchased Liverpool in 2010, is reportedly open to the opportunity as part of its strategy to further position the club for success. This move would be comparable to a previous partial sale where FSG sold 4% of the club to Dynasty Equity in September 2023. While FSG has emphasized that no deal is finalized and discussions are in the early stages, the formation of the consortium itself is seen as a significant development.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire views the potential deal as a "super smart piece of business" for FSG. The proposed investment, valued at approximately £1.35 billion for up to 30% of the club, values Liverpool at over £4 billion. Maguire noted that FSG would retain a controlling stake of around 60%, allowing them to continue making key decisions regarding the club's long-term strategy and player recruitment. The funds from such a sale would go to FSG, not directly to the club's operational budget.
Maguire also highlighted potential benefits beyond the immediate investment. Having investors of the stature of Mittal's family and Bezos could facilitate interest-free loans for the club in the future, improving cash flow. Additionally, a partnership with Amazon, particularly Amazon Prime, could offer significant synergies for global reach through content or sponsorship opportunities, aligning the global presence of both entities.
Bezos's involvement, though reportedly in its early stages, comes as he has shown previous interest in major sports acquisitions, including the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders, though those pursuits did not result in a purchase. Bhatia, who recently stepped down as co-owner and director of Queens Park Rangers after nearly two decades, is expected to manage the bid.
While FSG's ownership has seen periods of fan frustration, particularly regarding ticketing policies, their tenure has also been credited with regenerating Anfield and financially supporting a successful era for the club on the pitch. The current discussions suggest a strategic move by FSG to secure further investment without relinquishing control.
