Jane Street Suffers $15 Billion Loss Amid AI Stock Selloff

Jane Street, a prominent trading firm, experienced a substantial $15 billion loss in July, primarily due to its exposure to AI-focused investments and other technology stocks that experienced a market downturn. The firm noted that a significant portion of this loss stemmed from its investment in Situational Awareness, a hedge fund managed by Leopold Aschenbrenner.

Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, is known in the financial world as the “Nostradamus of AI.” Situational Awareness, which had performed well in the first half of the year, offloaded a large part of its stock portfolio in July to Ken Griffin’s Citadel following margin calls triggered by the AI stock selloff. Jane Street is among the investors in Situational Awareness.

In a note to its employees, Jane Street executives acknowledged July as a "bad month" for the firm. They explained that the drawdown at Situational Awareness contributed to the company’s poor performance during that period. The note indicated that while their stake in Situational Awareness was approximately flat for the year, it had been significantly up over the entire investment period prior to July’s losses.

Beyond its AI-related holdings, Jane Street also incurred losses from its long positions in non-AI stocks in Asia, which had previously shown strong market performance earlier in the year. The firm observed that AI-exposed stocks, including major memory and semiconductor companies, saw declines of around 50% in July.

In response to the losses, Jane Street stated its intention to become "more selective" regarding risk. The firm has since closed a significant portion of its risk in the areas that led to the July losses and has also reduced risk-taking in other strategies.

Despite the July setback, Jane Street has generated over $40 billion in trading revenue year-to-date, a figure that reportedly surpasses the trading revenue of major banks and other market-making competitors. The firm, known for its secretive operations, has not yet commented publicly on the matter.
