Jaguar Rolls Out New Electric Sedan Two Years After Controversial Launch
The all-electric Type 01 Grand Tourer marks a significant gamble for JLR in its pursuit of a luxury electric future for the brand.
Two years after a controversial relaunch, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has publicly unveiled the first of its new all-electric models, the Type 01. The four-door "Grand Tourer," presented in New York, represents a significant shift for the storied British marque.
A Bold New Direction
The Type 01 features a long bonnet designed to evoke Jaguar's iconic 1960s E-Type. The electric sedan is powered by motors producing approximately 1000 horsepower, enabling acceleration from 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds. JLR claims a range of up to 320 miles at sustained highway speeds. The company has positioned the vehicle as "the most technically advanced, powerful and aerodynamic Jaguar ever engineered," but it comes with a starting price of £130,000.
Navigating Controversy
The brand's aggressive reinvention faced backlash in early 2023, with critics labeling the initial concept car's "Barbie pink" color and the campaign's perceived alignment with "woke" ideology as a departure from Jaguar's heritage. This public relations challenge occurred as JLR committed £15 billion to new models and electric technologies for Jaguar.
Matthias Schmidt, an analyst at Schmidt Automotive Research, noted that Jaguar's traditional customer base had already shifted away from the brand, meaning JLR "effectively had nothing to lose." The controversy, while difficult, kept the Jaguar name in public view during a period of declining sales, shifting attention from what might have been an otherwise unremarkable product launch in a crowded market.
A High-Stakes Gamble
JLR ceased production of its older Jaguar models in 2024 and 2025. The Type 01 is expected to be the first of three new electric designs from Jaguar. Since the initial controversial event, JLR has seen leadership changes, including a new chief executive and parting ways with the agency responsible for the initial rebranding campaign.
Automotive journalist Steve Fowler described the current strategy as "a last throw of the dice" for JLR, which has historically struggled to generate substantial profits from Jaguar. The success of the Type 01 hinges on attracting buyers willing to pay a premium for a distinctive electric luxury car in a competitive landscape that includes offerings from Porsche, Mercedes-AMG, and emerging Chinese brands.
Ginny Buckley of Electrifying.com emphasized that ultimately, the car's success will depend on whether Jaguar has created a product extraordinary enough to justify abandoning its past identity. While acknowledging the car's quality, she noted that "the next challenge will be getting people to buy it."
