Jaguar Bets on Polarizing Design and Higher Prices for Brand Rebirth

Jaguar has unveiled its highly anticipated and controversial Type 01 electric vehicle, marking a significant reincarnation for the 90-year-old brand. The new EV, priced from approximately £120,000, represents a strategic shift to reposition Jaguar for a younger, urban, and affluent demographic. With monumental proportions measuring 5.2 meters in length and powered by three electric motors producing 1,015 horsepower, the Type 01 is built on Jaguar's bespoke Electric Architecture platform.

Managing Director Rawdon Glover described the Type 01 as potentially one of the most important cars in Jaguar's history, emphasizing the need for a wholesale change due to a shrinking and aging client base. "When we took all of those things into account for Jaguar, it was very clear that it was one of those times, and I think that takes courage. It takes conviction," Glover stated.

This reinvention is rooted in Jaguar's historical spirit of innovation, recalling the dramatic and distinctive designs of past models like the E-Type and XJS, which dared to break from convention rather than simply modernize existing designs. Glover explained that the brand's future lies in this willingness to "write a new chapter."

The decision to remain exclusively electric was driven by the desire for specific proportions, a distinctive design language, and a high level of performance and refinement that an electric powertrain enabled without compromise. Glover noted that research indicates that for buyers of £200,000 cars, design and emotional reaction are paramount, with powertrain preference being a secondary concern for many.

Jaguar acknowledges the Type 01's design may be divisive, but Glover embraces this, stating, "Great design should polarize. If you design something wanting everybody to like it, you end up with vanilla." Research involving over 2,500 individuals across four continents showed a significant split in opinions, with many giving the car high scores. The company has also seen strong interest from new potential customers, with 78 percent of those signing up for updates being new to the Jaguar brand.

The Type 01 was unveiled in New York, a key market for the brand, chosen for its vibrancy, creativity, and status as a global cultural center. The target buyer is described as urban, likely younger, interested in design and technology, but primarily defined by a strong sense of individuality and a desire to make a personal statement.

Jaguar is doubling its average selling price, moving from approximately £60,000-£65,000 to a target of £125,000. This positions the brand in the upper premium market, aiming to occupy a space below established luxury players but significantly above its previous price point. Glover sees this as a return to Jaguar's historical performance strengths.

While the Type 01 is a crucial product, Glover emphasized that its success will ultimately be measured alongside the entire portfolio of new vehicles. The primary goal is to reposition Jaguar in the market, focusing on value over volume, a strategy different from the past two decades. Success will be measured in tens of thousands of units globally, emphasizing variable profit generation.

Addressing criticism and perceptions of the brand's shift, Glover acknowledged that social media can be simplistic. He has spent considerable effort explaining Jaguar's vision, emphasizing that the changes are in the spirit of the brand's heritage and in its best interest. He believes that those within the organization best understand the Jaguar brand and are capable of returning it to its
